Xul Solar

May 1, 2007

Interesting to learn about Xul Solar from Giornale Nuovo via Barista (whose spam filter, for some reason, prevents me from writing this as a comment on his site). While I am not sure that I like his paintings, I do find them compellingly interesting.

Particularly this pair, painted in the same year (1961) and obviously part of a series.

The first is Saint Ignatius, founder of the Jesuits and the second is Alistair Crowley, notorious occultist – the painting is called Muy Mago which I think means great magician. Here was a man in his 70’s still maintaining an obviously sympathetic interest in both the occult and the Catholic as he had throughout his adult life, and presumably seeing no conflict.
